The post-war reconstruction of the historic city of Mosul in Iraq presented an opportunity for Saye Architecture Office to propose a prototype residential unit that could expand into a full neighborhood. The project was conceived to create a healthy, social environment for residents, helping them heal the wounds left by war.

Another major consideration in the design is providing each family with a flexible space that can be adapted to their specific needs. The war destroyed much of Mosul’s infrastructure and disrupted the foundations of everyday life. Offices, workshops, shopping centers, and most workplaces were demolished and rendered unusable. Transportation networks were also damaged, leaving residents with limited mobility and access.

In this project, the residential units are organized around a lush central courtyard that forms a semi-private zone shared by four families. The buildings are raised on pilotis, allowing the ground level to be used for small businesses, workshops, or other community-oriented activities.

By integrating living and working spaces within a neighborhood-scale framework, the project creates a balanced and human-centered environment that reconnects social bonds. It represents a sustainable design approach envisioned for long-term use and adaptability.
