Negarestan Mansion sits within a vast garden in northern Tehran, surrounded by tall, centuries-old trees and nourished by a natural spring that has flowed through the site for generations. Saye Architects was commissioned to design and execute the landscape of this historic garden.

The design process began with a careful study of the existing elements — the placement of the old trees, the natural water channels, and the small fountains and ponds that had formed over time. Working in a garden with such a deep past required sensitivity and respect. Every intervention was made to appear timeless, as if it had always belonged to the place.

In areas where moss-covered stones and delicate ecosystems had developed, the design was adapted to preserve them. The ancient plane trees revealed the traces of old water paths, which informed the reimagined flow of water through the garden. Locally sourced stone, cut into varied sizes and shapes, was used to create paths and ponds that harmonize naturally with the terrain.

The landscape was completed with walking trails, vehicular routes, and tranquil ponds — all designed to appear organic and enduring. Respect for the site’s natural life extended even to the birds, squirrels, and spring fish that inhabit it. Night lighting was therefore designed to minimize light pollution, allowing the garden to remain a peaceful habitat long after sunset.
